Year 6 Careers Event Inspires Pupils to Dream Big and Explore New Horizons
In October, we hosted our second annual Year 6 Careers Event, welcoming representatives from 11 different industries – 9 of which were parent volunteers. The initiative formed part of our PSHE curriculum and tasked pupils with identifying the key skills needed in each career. It also broadened our children’s horizons, allowing them to discover that nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams, as long as you work hard.
A range of industries were represented, giving pupils a taste of every sector imaginable. There were pharmacists, solicitors, technology experts, painters/decorators and attendees from De Montfort University.
Children were especially delighted to also hear from our very own Mr Cass, who spoke about running his own maintenance company before he joined Brocks Hill. He also enjoyed sharing the school’s proposed building plans.
Set up around the Hall, children visited each ‘station’ in turn and discovered more about each career option. At the painting and decorating station, they were able to examine different kinds of paintbrush and the different ways of making paint.
At the DMU stand, they were able to gain an insight into the world of university and higher education.
It was a fantastic experience and one that the pupils – and volunteers – thoroughly benefited from.
One parent volunteer said: “It was lovely to give back to our school community and support the Year 6 pupils in beginning to identify the next steps in their educational journey.”
Claire from Bagnalls – the Painting and Decorating stand – said: “Thanks for having me, Brocks Hill, your pupils are so well-behaved and I had a great time showing the children that anyone can have a career in any industry and to break down stereotypes.”
We look forward to hosting an even bigger and better event next year!
